Fatal Accident: Hearing of the Driver Transporting Rajenee and Kaylasson Mootoo-Caroopen
The driver who was transporting the former mayor of Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill, Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen, and her husband Kaylasson to the airport on January 21, 2026 — the day of the tragic accident that cost them their lives — was discharged from the hospital last week. This resident of Rose-Hill was questioned on Wednesday by the Rose-Belle police as part of the ongoing investigation.
Reflecting on the fatal journey, he explained to the police that he was heading towards the Plaisance airport when suddenly he was surprised by a car that appeared in his path and crashed into him. Due to the force of the impact, he claimed to have lost control of his vehicle, leading to the tragedy. The Rose-Belle police, along with an ambulance, were dispatched to the scene.
Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen passed away shortly after the impact. The driver, aged 64, along with the victim's daughter and Kaylasson Mootoo-Caroopen, 72, were injured. The septuagenarian, whose health condition was concerning, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, January 25.
As for the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident, he now faces two charges of involuntary manslaughter. The investigation continues to establish the exact circumstances of this double tragedy.
