At Melrose Prison: Two Phones Seized from the Cell of a Nigerian Heroin Trafficker
On Friday, January 23, two mobile phones were confiscated from a cell in the high-security Melrose Prison during a targeted operation conducted by the prison services.
The intervention took place early in the morning in "Landing Cell 3" of the Trochetia block, based on precise information gathered by the prison's Intelligence Unit. The search targeted Nigerian inmate Jevis Nnamdi Ogbonna, suspected of hiding prohibited items in his cell. The operation was supervised by the Deputy Commissioner of Prisons, Dev Jokhoo.
During the search, two mobile phones, each with its battery, were discovered and seized. The devices were handed over to the Montagne-Blanche police. An investigation has been launched to determine how they were smuggled into the prison premises.
Jevis Nnamdi Ogbonna was arrested in February 2020 in Grand-Baie while in possession of 95 grams of heroin concealed in a juice brick, valued at an estimated Rs 1.4 million. He was also in an irregular situation in Mauritius at the time of his arrest.
