Bet365 Case: Suspended Prison Sentence for Husein Abdool Rahim

On Thursday, January 29, Husein Abdool Rahim was sentenced to twelve months in prison by the Intermediate Court. However, Judge Sophie Chui-Gunesse suspended the sentence, ordering a report from the Probation Office to consider converting it into community service.

This decision comes in the context of the trial in which Husein Abdool Rahim was found guilty of fraud against Sylvio Sundanum, who had been led to believe in enormous winnings through the Bet365 UK Online Sports Betting platform.

The accused must now wait until February 12 to learn whether the probation report is favorable for executing community service.

In this case, the complainant accused Husein Abdool Rahim of staging a fake win of approximately Rs 91 million to defraud him. Sylvio Sundanum claims to have lost Rs 935,000, a sum that the Court reduced to Rs 635,000 after he admitted during cross-examination by Me Assad Peeroo that he had recovered Rs 300,000.

Furthermore, the man responsible for the downfall of former Attorney General Ravi Yerrigadoo faced a second fraud charge involving Rs 500,000, filed by his former partner. However, he was acquitted of this charge.

It is worth noting that in his closing arguments, Me Assad Peeroo advocated for a non-custodial sentence, which means a penalty that does not involve imprisonment.
