Election of the Bar Council: Me Antoine Domingue, Senior Counsel, President for the Third Time
This marks the third time that Me Antoine Domingue, Senior Counsel, has held the position of President of the Mauritius Bar Association, having received 355 votes.
The election took place on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the MBA headquarters in Port-Louis. He succeeds Me Anwar Moollan, Senior Counsel, who garnered 187 votes.
Three candidates were running for the presidency: Me Antoine Domingue, SC; Me Anwar Moollan, SC; and Sacheen Boodhoo, a former magistrate and lawyer at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Boodhoo received 47 votes.
The new president expressed his gratitude and happiness at being re-elected to the presidency after previously serving in 2014 and 2015. He stated, "It will be a pleasure to work with my colleagues, most of whom are from the former board that has been re-elected."
At 72 years old, he has also served as the President of the Utility Regulatory Board (URB) since March 2025 for a five-year term.
Having been admitted to the Mauritian bar in 1987, Me Domingue emphasized that his priority is to continue the work that has been done and to restore institutional stability, while also mentioning that "there are other projects coming up," including "the purchase of the building that houses the MBA headquarters."
Regarding the evolution of lawyers within the current system, the president highlighted the need to "defend the interests of lawyers."
On the amendments made to certain legislation, particularly the Law Practitioners (Disciplinary Proceedings) Act, the Senior Counsel noted that this has already become a subject of controversy and disputes in court. He plans to meet with Chief Justice Bibi Rehana Mungly-Gulbul as well as Attorney General Gavin Glover. "We will see what the way forward is in everyone's interest," he asserted.
Commenting on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the bar, Me Antoine Domingue stated that "it is a tool that he frequently uses himself." However, he cautioned that caution is necessary, emphasizing that it is not AI that should control the work. He is firm: "AI should work for you."
Additionally, Me Antoine Domingue holds a master's degree in civil law (1976) and has been a lawyer since 1985. He has often argued before the Privy Council and served as the interim president of the former Mauritius Telecommunications Authority while teaching law at the Council of Legal Education.
