Chagos/Diego Garcia File: An American Delegation Expected in Mauritius by Late February 2026
The Mauritian government is closely monitoring developments regarding the "Chagos" issue following a statement from U.S. President Donald Trump and the subsequent position taken by the UK Prime Minister, particularly concerning the bill related to the Diego Garcia military base and the British Indian Ocean Territory.
A high-level U.S. delegation is set to visit Mauritius on February 24 and 25, 2026, to discuss a proposed security partnership agreement between the USA and Mauritius, as well as to enhance cooperation in the western Indian Ocean.
Additionally, debates on the bill concerning the Diego Garcia military base and the British Indian Ocean Territory, which were scheduled to resume in the House of Lords on Monday, January 26, 2026, have been postponed.
The government has also noted the ongoing discussions between Mauritius and the UK regarding the implementation of the agreement established between the Government of the Republic of Mauritius and that of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland concerning the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia. This was discussed in the Cabinet meeting held on Friday, January 30.
