Title: Two Tourist Assaults in Just Days: A Hungarian Man and a Russian Lawyer Robbed of Rs 115,000

Content: Tourist assaults and thefts tarnish the image of an island renowned for its hospitality. Within a few days, a Hungarian national was assaulted and robbed by two suspects who are now incarcerated, while a Russian lawyer reported the theft of over Rs 70,000 from her accommodation.

A Hungarian man and his friend, vacationing on the island until February 3, are unlikely to forget their trip. On their very first day, Monday, January 26, they encountered trouble. After dropping off their luggage at a villa in Grand-Baie, they headed to the public beach of Trou-aux-Biches.

There, they met two Mauritians, Jean Henry Pierre, 25, and William Arecksamy, 22. A spontaneous friendship blossomed in a friendly atmosphere. Over beers, the tourist thought he had made new friends, unaware of what was about to happen.

A Departure That Turns into a Nightmare

Around 7 PM, the Hungarian national, intoxicated, and his friend decided to leave. As they walked toward the bus stop near the taxi stand, one of the Mauritians punched the tourist in the face, causing him to fall and injure his arm. His accomplice seized his bag containing foreign currency and an iPhone. The two assailants escaped on a motorcycle with loot estimated at Rs 43,000.

The police of Trou-aux-Biches and the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) were alerted. The victim, who refused medical assistance, stated he could identify his attackers. Their descriptions were forwarded to the Northern Division units.

An operation was then organized by the DCIU. On Wednesday, Jean Henry Pierre and William Arecksamy were arrested in Roche-Bois. Brought to the CID station in Trou-aux-Biches, they confessed and appeared before the Pamplemousses court under a temporary charge of robbery with violence.

A Russian Lawyer Victim of Theft in Mont-Choisy

A Russian tourist staying in Mont-Choisy filed a complaint on Wednesday, January 28, after noticing a significant amount of money had gone missing from her accommodation. The 41-year-old lawyer had arrived in Mauritius on January 10 with her family and was set to leave the country on January 29.

According to her statement, 400 euros and 1,100 US dollars, equivalent to Rs 71,337, were stolen from her leather bag stored in a wooden wardrobe inside her room. Although the accommodation had anti-burglary features, it lacked surveillance cameras, alarms, and a security guard. The complainant suspects a maid but could not formally identify the thief.

An investigation has been launched.
