Title: Police Brutality: Hans Juliette Suffered 14 Blows with a Baton
Content: A video of the forceful arrest of Hans Emmanuel Juliette has circulated widely on social media. Lasting about 30 seconds, the footage shows the young man on the ground in a cluttered area filled with sheets of metal, blocks, and debris, while a police officer strikes him repeatedly with a baton.
Bare-chested, Hans Emmanuel Juliette writhes under the blows, attempting to shield himself. However, unable to defend himself due to being handcuffed, he is at the mercy of the enraged officer, who delivers no less than 14 vicious blows. The violence inflicted upon the suspect does not deter this outburst. This scene of senseless violence unfolds in front of shocked residents. "Hey! Look how they are beating him," a female voice exclaims, visibly shaken.
The violence does not go unnoticed by the other police officers present. "Hey, enough! Leave him alone!" they shout at their colleague. They manage, with difficulty, to halt the assault. One officer seizes the baton. The injured suspect is then dragged mercilessly to the police vehicle. As they leave the scene, the officers call out to a resident, "Madam, stop filming." "No," she firmly retorts.
On the same day, in the afternoon, this shocking scene spread rapidly on social media, particularly on Facebook and TikTok.
François, the father: "They beat him like an animal"
The Juliette family is outraged by the treatment inflicted on Hans Emmanuel. "The police beat him badly," recounts François, the father. Early Thursday morning, the police raided their home on JSS Street in Goodlands to arrest him. Hans Emmanuel was still in bed when the police arrived. "Without knocking, they barged in. They dragged him from his bed. They were brutal with him," adds François.
The 25-year-old was wanted due to a complaint for assault with a corrosive substance and for not appearing in court for a previous case. He was taken to the Goodlands police station. However, according to his father, Hans Emmanuel was a victim of police brutality. "They beat him, he ran because they were hitting him, he couldn’t take it," he explains to justify his son’s escape from the police station once there.
"He went to hide at his friend’s place; they beat him like an animal; they have no right to do that," he added. Speaking about the attack, the suspect’s father said: "It’s ridiculous. They seized his phone and motorcycle for Rs 1,000," adding that the young man had always cooperated with the police.
"That kind of baton strike!"
Ricardo, a close friend, does not hide his anger either. "We don’t need to know his faults. The police cannot beat handcuffed people. You hit him on the head like you’re killing an animal. That kind of baton strike! Everyone saw what happened. We don’t agree; we want justice," he exclaimed. "Did he receive any treatment? Who knows. I hope the government understands what is happening and takes this seriously," he said.

On Wednesday, January 28, a 22-year-old mason living on Camélia Avenue in Cité Ste-Claire, Goodlands, reported that the day before, around 5 PM, while sitting by the roadside in front of his brother-in-law’s house on JSS Avenue, he was the victim of an acid attack.
According to him, the assailant was riding a motorcycle, brand Aprilia. He stopped next to him before splashing him with the corrosive substance, affecting his legs and causing burns. The motorcyclist then fled. This attack appears to be linked to a case of counterfeit currency. Me Prisca Perianen from Dis-Moi: "No one is above the law"
"This is not maintaining order, but violence," laments lawyer Prisca Perianen, a member of the anti-torture commission at Dis-Moi. According to her, the observed act constitutes an abuse of power and not the application of the law.
Commenting on the video that has gone viral since Thursday on social media, which shows a uniformed police officer striking a suspect, the lawyer insists: penalties against lawbreakers must strictly adhere to legal provisions. "Justice is served only in a court of law. No one is above the law," she reminds them.
