Health: Nipah Virus: Enhanced Vigilance in Asia and Locally After Two Cases in India

As 2026 has just begun, the state of West Bengal in Northeast India has confirmed two cases of Nipah virus infection. In response, several neighboring countries have strengthened their surveillance measures to prevent any spread.

Since January 24, 2026, Thailand has been screening about 700 passengers daily arriving from West Bengal at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, and Phuket airports. Meanwhile, Nepal has intensified checks at its borders.
