[Crossing of Fear] A Stolen Speedboat, Three Suspects on the Run, and a Tense Maritime Network
Three individuals are actively being sought by law enforcement following the theft of a speedboat in Morne, turning this case into a particularly alarming situation. These suspects are believed to be direct accomplices of the two individuals already arrested since Tuesday evening and are thought to be involved in an illegal maritime crossing project between Mauritius and Réunion as part of a cannabis trafficking operation. The investigation, conducted under high tension, reveals an operation that was meticulously planned and executed discreetly during the night.
To recap, the pleasure boat, owned by someone based in Réunion, was reported stolen to the police on Tuesday evening by its skipper. The alert was raised shortly after the boat's disappearance, triggering a large-scale search operation at sea and along the west coast of the island. Authorities quickly favored the theory of organized theft, given the circumstances and the profile of the boat.
The first two suspects apprehended are aged 34 and 36 and reside in Bel-Ombre and Pointe-aux-Sables, respectively. They were arrested on Tuesday evening while on the beach. Initial findings from the investigation suggest that they acted in collusion with three other individuals to facilitate a maritime journey related to a drug transaction between Mauritius and Réunion. The two men are currently in police custody and are being interrogated by investigators.
During their questioning, the suspects disclosed to the police that the speedboat was stolen specifically for the purpose of making the Mauritius–Réunion crossing for cannabis trafficking. These statements have intensified authorities' suspicions regarding the existence of a structured network using maritime routes to transport drugs. The three presumed accomplices allegedly fled aboard the vessel during the police operation, narrowly escaping capture.
The hunt intensified when elements of the National Coast Guard, supported by the Maritime Intelligence Cell, located the abandoned speedboat off the coast of Rivière-Noire. Upon arrival at the site, officers made a disturbing discovery: the boat's engine was still warm. This crucial detail indicated that the suspects had just abandoned the vessel, suggesting a hurried escape in response to law enforcement's advance.
Onboard the speedboat, authorities also found a quantity of fuel contained in a jerrycan. This additional fuel reinforces the theory that the vessel was intended for a long journey at sea, compatible with a crossing to Réunion. The condition of the boat and the items found onboard are currently being examined to gather any potential additional evidence.
The investigation is being conducted jointly by the Western Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and the anti-drug brigade. Active searches continue to locate the three suspects on the run, while authorities are increasing patrols and inspections along the coasts and in targeted areas. This case, involving theft, a sea escape, and drug trafficking, continues to mobilize significant police resources and keeps the region under close surveillance.
