Landslide at a Mining Site in DRC: Kinshasa Fears 'At Least 200 Deaths'

The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) stated in a press release sent to AFP on Sunday that it fears a toll of "at least 200 deaths" following a "massive" landslide that occurred on Wednesday at the significant mining site of Rubaya (east), which is controlled by the M23.

The Rubaya mines, primarily worked by artisanal miners under precarious conditions, contribute between 15% and 30% of the world's coltan. Since April 2024, the site has been under the control of the M23, an anti-government armed group supported by Rwanda.
