Social Media Ban for Young People: Snapchat Blocks 415,000 Accounts in Australia
Snapchat announced on Monday that it has blocked or deactivated 415,000 accounts of users under the age of 16 in Australia over the past two months, following the implementation of a law prohibiting their access to social media.
Australia aims to protect younger individuals from the dangers of social media. On February 2, Snapchat revealed that it had blocked or disabled 415,000 accounts of users under 16 since the law restricting their access took effect two months ago.
"We continue to lock accounts on a daily basis," Snapchat stated in a press release. However, the social media platform highlighted the limitations of its control measures, explaining that the tools used to verify users' ages can have an error margin of two to three years.
"In practice, this means that some under-16s can bypass the protections, potentially leaving them with fewer safeguards, while other users over 16 may unjustly lose access," according to the statement.
