Launch of Cutlass Express 2026 in Vacoas: An Exercise Aimed at Strengthening Regional Maritime Security Cooperation
On February 3rd, the Cutlass Express 2026 exercise was officially launched at the Philippe Oh San auditorium in Vacoas, addressing numerous challenges and threats facing East Africa and the western Indian Ocean region. Sponsored by US Naval Forces Africa, this two-week exercise, running from February 2nd to 13th, aims to enhance regional cooperation in maritime security.
In his speech, Police Commissioner Rampersad Sooroojebally emphasized the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean region, which is particularly confronted with piracy, illicit trafficking, illegal fishing, terrorism, maritime cybercrime, and the increasing effects of climate change.
He reminded that maritime security is a national imperative for Mauritius, crucial for economic stability, the protection of maritime resources, and the security of the country.
The maritime security operations for Cutlass Express 2026 will involve naval forces from approximately 20 nations, including Belgium, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, France, Georgia, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania, Tunisia, and the United States.
