A 23-year-old trainee nurse was assaulted by a patient while on duty at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital (JNH) in Rose-Belle. The incident occurred on Friday, January 3, 2026, around 9:30 AM in room 0.5 of the facility. The young nurse sustained facial injuries and was hospitalized. A complaint has been filed for assault on a public official resulting in bodily harm.

According to gathered information, the nurse, assigned to this hospital as part of his training, was approached by a patient residing on Ville-Noire Street in Mahébourg, who requested an intravenous drip.

Concerned about adhering to hygiene protocols, the trainee went to the nurses' station to obtain latex gloves.

The situation then escalated. The patient became aggressive and verbally abusive before approaching the nurse and headbutting him in the nose.

The nurse sustained a significant injury with heavy bleeding. He was treated in the emergency department and then admitted to a room for observation and treatment. His condition is deemed stable. Shocked by the incident, he filed a complaint the same day.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of this assault.
