BMW Begins Pre-Series Production of the New Electric i3 at Munich Plant
BMW's historic plant in Munich takes a significant step towards full electrification with the launch of pre-series production of the upcoming BMW i3. This kickoff marks the final preparation phase before mass production of this electric sedan, scheduled for the second half of 2026. The i3, being the first model from the "Neue Klasse" range to be assembled in an existing and modernized facility, symbolizes the transformation of the manufacturer's industrial tools. To achieve this, BMW had to convert about one-third of its Munich facilities over the past eighteen months while maintaining the operations of current production lines.
This pre-series phase goes beyond just the technical assembly of the initial units; it serves as a full-scale test for the entire logistics chain and the "iFACTORY" strategy. Although production volumes remain low for now, all material flows and digital processes are being meticulously examined to validate the integration of new production tools. The plant teams, trained at the brand's Research and Innovation Center, are utilizing these first vehicles to refine every step, from the new body shop to the modernized assembly line, ensuring a smooth transition to large-scale manufacturing.
For BMW management, this milestone confirms that the Munich plant is now ready to operate under real conditions with cutting-edge technologies. Peter Weber, the site director, emphasizes that the production of this first i3 fully made on-site demonstrates the efficiency of the logistical structures and the digital networking of processes. In the coming months, the experience gained from these pre-series models will be used to optimize the final technical and operational details, ensuring that the brand can meet the quality standards required for its new generation of electric vehicles starting next year.
