TikTok Scam: The Dream of an iPhone 15 Turns into a Nightmare for a Young Woman

Enticed by an attractive price on TikTok, an 18-year-old woman lost Rs 15,700. After two electronic payments, the seller became unreachable, taking her money with him.

The young woman claims she was a victim of a presumed scam while trying to buy a mobile phone online. The incident was reported to the police in Pointe-aux-Sables on Tuesday, February 3, where a complaint for electronic fraud was filed.

According to her statement, the complainant was at home browsing her TikTok account when she came across a post promoting the sale of an iPhone 15 Pro at a tempting price. The advertisement was from a company claiming to be based in Morne.

Interested, the young woman states she contacted the seller via the WhatsApp number provided in the post. A representative explained that delivery could only happen after paying half of the amount in advance, with the balance due upon delivery of the phone.

Due to insufficient funds, she claims to have made two separate payments totaling Rs 15,700 through an electronic payment app, to a bank account provided by the seller. She also shared her personal details and address for delivery, which was promised for the same evening. However, despite several attempts to reach out, the seller became unreachable. The next morning, the victim received a message stating that the delivery could not be made because full payment had not been completed.

Suspecting a scam, the complainant reported the fraudulent operation to the police on Tuesday. She provided investigators with screenshots of her conversations, as well as a bank statement to support her complaint. The police are now trying to trace the alleged perpetrators, who remain unidentified at this stage.
