Death of John Mick Martingale in Prison: A Prison Officer recounts the Inmate's Last Hours
The investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of John Mick Martingale continued at the Rose Hill court this Thursday. During questioning by Me Ricky Bhookun, Senior State Counsel, Prison Officer Kritish Ghoorah recounted the events that took place on the night of September 7, 2024.
During his patrol around 8:30 PM, he caught the inmate with a mobile phone.
A search was subsequently conducted in John Mick Martingale's cell, where officers from Beau-Bassin prison seized the device. According to Kritish Ghoorah, the inmate did not resist and handed over the phone. He stated that John Mick Martingale showed no signs of physical or psychological violence.
Furthermore, the Prison Officer mentioned that the deceased had previously told him he wanted to commit suicide to avoid being held in the "punishment ward," after cigarettes were discovered in his possession. The judicial inquiry will resume on February 19, 2026.
It is worth noting that John Mick Martingale was arrested on October 29, 2022, at the airport after traveling with Ukrainian Mariia Perosolkina.
