Ashok Subron: "The Future of Our Society Largely Depends on Women"

Ashok Subron, the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security, and National Solidarity, participated in the launch of a workshop focused on women's empowerment, coinciding with the dual celebration of International Women's Day and Independence Day. This event, organized by the community development division of the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund, took place on Thursday, March 5, 2026, in Notre-Dame. The MP for constituency number 4 (Port-Louis North–Montagne Longue), Ludovic Caserne, was also present at the event.

In his speech, Subron reminded the audience that Mauritius will soon celebrate the anniversary of its independence, emphasizing that this celebration is a significant moment for the nation and the Mauritian people.

"For a long time, our people did not have the right to vote or make decisions for themselves. Decisions were made by the British. The struggle for independence allowed our country to choose its own future and determine what is best for future generations," stated the minister.

He also stressed the importance of preserving independence and sovereignty in a global context marked by tensions and conflicts. "Today, many countries are losing their independence because some states consider themselves superior to others. The recent war initiated by the State of Israel constitutes a violation of another country's sovereignty. This represents a breach of international law and the United Nations Charter that is not being respected," Ashok Subron indicated.

According to him, the core values guiding the celebration of Mauritius’ independence this year remain essential for the stability and development of the country. "Peace, justice, and freedom are the three values that must continue to guide our nation. Without peace, a country can quickly fall into serious difficulties," he asserted.

The minister also addressed the upcoming celebration of International Women's Rights Day, paying tribute to the significant contributions of women in Mauritian society and throughout human history.

"Women have made major contributions to the struggle for freedom and societal progress. They play a crucial role both in biological reproduction and social reproduction," he highlighted.

While recognizing this contribution, Ashok Subron expressed concern about the ongoing psychological and physical violence against women, particularly the rising cases of femicide.

He announced specific support for women victims of violence, a measure that is on the agenda of the Council of Ministers this Friday.

"Violence against women is a very serious reality. Out of 100 victims of violence, more than eighty-six are women," he stated. The minister mentioned that new legislation is being prepared by the government to strengthen the protection of women.

He also emphasized the importance of women's economic empowerment to help them better balance their social reproduction responsibilities with their professional duties.

Furthermore, he underlined that the future of society largely depends on the role and vision of women. "The future of our society largely depends on women, their worldview, and the values they continue to impart. Women give life and carry innate ecological values. The sustainability of human society in this context of multiple crises requires the vision of women," he declared.
