In celebration of International Women’s Rights Day, the Mauritian government has launched a new initiative aimed at financially supporting women who are victims of domestic violence. This program will provide temporary assistance to victims residing in shelters and holding a Protection Order. This information was shared in a press release from the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security, and National Solidarity, issued on Friday, March 6.
Starting March 8, women who have obtained a Protection Order from a magistrate under the Protection from Domestic Violence Act 1997, and who reside in centers run by NGOs recognized by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, will be able to access this grant.
The monthly amount will vary based on the family situation:
• Rs 6,000 for a victim without children
• Rs 8,000 for a victim with one child
• Rs 10,000 for a victim with two or more children
This assistance, approved by the Council of Ministers, will be granted for a maximum duration of two months, a crucial period to support victims in their personal recovery and financial independence after leaving a violent environment.
Minister of Social Integration, Ashok Subron, Deputy Minister Kugan Parapen, and the Chairperson of the National Solidarity Fund, Pouba Essoo, emphasized the significance of this support, which is also backed by the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare.
