Paul Bérenger on the Chagos Issue: "We are in a bind!"
The Chagos issue remains a source of concern within the government. The agreement to acknowledge Mauritian sovereignty has been in place for some time, yet its ratification by the House of Lords is still pending.
According to Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger, this situation raises some alarm. "We are in a bind," he stated after the central committee of the MMM this Saturday, expressing discomfort over the prolonged delays. English conservatives have reportedly understood that the Mauritian Prime Minister is considering legal action against London. Although the Prime Minister mentioned that he is exploring "legal avenues," it has been clarified that these statements were misinterpreted.
Mauritian authorities are therefore working to correct these interpretations, according to Paul Bérenger.
Regarding the fight against drugs, the National Agency for Drug Control (NADC) will continue its work, and developments are expected in the coming days, claims the Mauves leader. In the meantime, a new head has been appointed to the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) to ensure the continuity of ground operations.
Electoral reform also remains on the agenda. A Cabinet Paper has reportedly been re-discussed at the Council of Ministers, suggesting that the issue could return to the forefront in the coming months.
Concerning the port, several recommendations have already been approved by the Council of Ministers, and consultations are expected to commence soon. This situation is described by Paul Bérenger as a matter of life or death for the port.
