On February 23, 2026, Mohammad Nadiim Murthen, 28, was sentenced to six years in prison by the Intermediate Court for the fatal assault of Sheik Mohammad Mazaheer Mahamoodally, aged 44. The incident occurred on February 23, 2022, in Plaine-Lauzun.
Murthen faced charges of causing death without intent to kill. He was accused of fatally attacking Mazaheer Mahamoodally on February 13, 2022, in Plaine-Lauzun and pleaded guilty.
On February 13, 2022, around 10:45 PM, the accused was at home when he noticed the deceased, who appeared intoxicated, in front of his gate. Mazaheer Mahamoodally was holding a metal pipe and asked for help transporting some items to his home.
Finding the request strange, Murthen confronted him, leading to a heated exchange. Mazaheer Mahamoodally then pulled out a sword and threatened Murthen.
Murthen unsuccessfully asked Mazaheer Mahamoodally's daughter to intervene. Mazaheer Mahamoodally attempted to pull him towards his house, prompting Murthen to retreat to his home.
Two Concrete Blocks
Fearing pursuit, Murthen locked his door and climbed onto the roof. Shortly after, he saw Mazaheer Mahamoodally, still armed, approaching him. In a panic, he threw two concrete blocks at him. Mazaheer Mahamoodally sustained severe head injuries and collapsed.
The accused did help by wrapping a cloth around Mazaheer Mahamoodally's head to stop the bleeding and asked his brother to alert the police and the emergency medical services (SAMU). Mazaheer Mahamoodally was taken to the hospital by SAMU and died from his skull injuries on February 20, 2022.
During the trial, Murthen claimed he did everything possible to save Mazaheer Mahamoodally.
Magistrate Prithiviraj Balluck acknowledged that Murthen assisted the injured man and called for help, noting that he acted out of fear for his life.
Additionally, it was reported that Mazaheer Mahamoodally tested positive for COVID-19 on February 18, 2022, during his hospitalization and suffered from respiratory issues.
The magistrate also considered that Murthen is the father of two children and the sole financial provider for his family. However, the crime committed was serious, resulting in the loss of a human life, and it was noted that Murthen had previous encounters with the law.
