Alleged Murder of Rebecca Laretif: Ashok Subron Announces a National Investigation into Care Homes
The alleged murder of Rebecca Laretif, a resident of the Mon Destin care home in Forest-Side, has prompted an immediate response from the Ministry of Social Security. The 33-year-old woman was reportedly strangled on Tuesday by a fellow resident, 22-year-old Marie Isabelle Megane Ang-Ho, who has since been admitted to Brown Sequard Hospital.
On Wednesday evening, Minister Ashok Subron stated to Défi Media Group: "I extend my solidarity to the family of the deceased following the alleged attack. An initial investigation has been conducted to determine exactly what happened in this care home. Our immediate priority is the safety of the residents still present."
According to the minister, 24 residents were still living in the facility at the time of the incident: "We have retrieved all the files to examine the situation in this care home. The priority is for our medical unit to conduct a complete health assessment of the 24 residents. Psychologists from the Ministry of Gender will also be on-site to provide psychological support. We will take necessary measures to transfer some residents to hospitals if needed."
Beyond the facility in question, the minister announced a national initiative: "I have instructed that a comprehensive national audit be carried out by a consultant for all care homes in the country in the coming months. In fact, work was already underway. But from now on, a unit from the ministry will conduct surveys in this care home and all others. We will also assess whether some residents need to be transferred. The top priority is to ensure that all residents are healthy, both physically and psychologically."
The Mon Destin care home operates as a Nursing Care Centre, accommodating dependent individuals who require daily assistance.
