National Day: Ramgoolam Reveals His Two Priorities

On the occasion of the 58th anniversary of independence, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam unveiled the two major priorities of his government: combating drug trafficking and revitalizing the economy.

The Prime Minister acknowledges that the fight against drugs is particularly challenging, as the problem is widespread. He illustrated this in his address to the nation on Thursday, saying, "Drug trafficking is like a serpent with multiple heads. When you cut off one, another rises."

Despite these challenges, Navin Ramgoolam assures that efforts are intensifying, particularly with the appointment of a senior officer to lead the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) and the upcoming presentation of the National Crime Agency bill in Parliament.

The second priority is economic recovery. The Prime Minister warns of an immediate risk: a potential downgrade by Moody’s, which is closely monitoring the Mauritian economic situation.

"We have an obligation to reduce public debt and the deficit," he emphasized, stressing the need for concrete actions to secure the country’s economic future.
