Dr Nizam Domah, GOSK: "Cardiology is a Dynamic Specialty"
Dr. Nizam Domah, a cardiologist, has been honored with the title of Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. This recognition celebrates three decades dedicated to cardiology and patient care in Mauritius.
"This is a great honor. I am very grateful for this distinction. It shows that the hard work we have done has been acknowledged," Dr. Nizam Domah stated. He explained that his medical career spans over thirty years. After completing his medical studies and specializing in cardiology at the University of Bordeaux in France, he chose to return to Mauritius in 1991 to practice in his home country. However, the beginning was not easy.
"Upon my return, I was told there was no position available for a cardiologist. So, I worked as a general practitioner for two years before I could fully practice as a cardiologist," he recounted. He then joined the Ministry of Health, particularly in the cardiology unit of Candos Hospital, at a time when this service was still developing. "The service was in its early stages, and we worked hard to provide the best possible care for our patients."
Throughout his career, the cardiologist has held various responsibilities. He served as a consultant and Head of Unit, contributing to the development and improvement of cardiology services in the country. He is pleased with the progress made in this specialty today. "When I see the advancements that cardiology has experienced in Mauritius, I am extremely happy."
A Dynamic Specialty
For Dr. Nizam Domah, cardiology has always represented a particularly stimulating discipline. "It is a dynamic specialty. The results of interventions are often immediate, and patients can quickly see an improvement in their condition," he explained.
On a personal level, this honor represents significant recognition after many years of hard work. "I never thought I would be rewarded at this level. And I am very grateful to the government for this distinction." The cardiologist pays tribute to his family for their unwavering support throughout his career. He highlights the steadfast support of his wife. "My wife has always been very understanding and supportive. She has never been negative, even when she had to wait for long hours while I was called for emergencies," he said. He also mentions the encouragement from his children, Farya and Javed, who have always supported him in his professional commitment. "My two children have always encouraged me to move forward." For Dr. Nizam Domah, this distinction is not only a personal recognition but also a tribute to all the people who have accompanied him throughout his medical career.
