Veda Baloomoody: Decades of Commitment

Vedasangam Vasudevachariar (Veda) Baloomoody exemplifies the journey of a diligent lawyer and a committed politician. At 66 years old, this resident of Curepipe, with a rich and respected background, has been honored with the title of Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GOSK) in celebration of the 58th anniversary of Independence and the 34th anniversary of the Republic of Mauritius.

Since 2024, Veda Baloomoody has served as the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, distinguishing himself over the decades through his unwavering commitment to the institutions and justice. His academic journey began in the United Kingdom, where he earned a degree in economics with honors from the University of Birmingham. He then continued his legal training at Middle Temple, one of the prestigious Inns of Court in London, before being called to the bar.

Admitted to the Mauritian bar in August 1984, he embarked on a legal career that would span over 40 years. A respected litigator, he has also made his mark as a legal advisor for several trade unions, frequently defending workers' rights, often on a voluntary basis. As a teacher and mentor, he has served as a Pupil Master, training numerous young lawyers, some of whom now hold key positions in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Office of the Attorney General, or within the judiciary.

However, Veda Baloomoody's contributions extend beyond the courtroom. He is also a seasoned politician. A member of the Militant Socialist Movement (MMM), he currently represents constituency No. 18 (Belle-Rose/Quatre-Bornes) in the National Assembly.

His political engagement has its roots at the local level. From 1985 to 1991, he served as a municipal counselor for Curepipe, later holding the position of deputy mayor from 1988 to 1989. This grassroots experience has shaped his pragmatic approach to politics. In Parliament, he has also stood out for his sense of rigor and transparency. From March 2016 to December 2017, he chaired the Public Accounts Committee as its president, a crucial body responsible for examining public expenditures and ensuring budgetary accountability.

His influence also extends beyond Mauritian borders. Active in regional and international parliamentary circles, he has been a member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the SADC Parliamentary Forum, where he served as treasurer for two years, and the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (AFROPAC) in 2016.

A rigorous jurist, Veda Baloomoody has established himself as a discreet figure whose exemplary journey is now recognized with one of the highest national honors.
