The Cold Room of Jeetoo Hospital's Morgue is Beyond Repair
On Tuesday, March 17, at the National Assembly, MP Farhad Aumeer questioned Health Minister Anil Bachoo regarding the state of the morgue at Jeetoo Hospital. The minister acknowledged the shortcomings, particularly the delays in installing a new cold room.
The minister admitted that the existing facilities are no longer operational. A contract was awarded on December 11, 2023, for the supply and installation of new equipment, with delivery originally scheduled for March 2024. However, deadlines were not met. "The equipment was only delivered on July 1, 2024, and installation was still ongoing," Anil Bachoo clarified.
An inspection conducted in January 2025 revealed several anomalies.
Contract
Despite several formal notices sent to the contractor, the defects have not been fully rectified.
A new inspection carried out in August 2025 confirmed that multiple issues persisted. In light of these findings, MP Farhad Aumeer questioned the decision to retain the contractor. He suggested that it would be more appropriate to consider hiring a different service provider.
The Health Minister explained that this option was not without consequences. He also noted that the number of providers specializing in such equipment is limited.
In this context, the ministry granted the contractor a final opportunity. "We accepted his proposal to provide new equipment at no additional cost," Anil Bachoo stated.
While awaiting the new cold room to become operational, temporary measures have been implemented. The minister announced the ongoing acquisition of two-place refrigerators in hospitals. Some bodies are being transferred to other medical facilities.
