Recycling: Call to Accelerate the Transition to a Circular Economy

On the occasion of World Recycling Day, PIM Recycling gathered authorities and stakeholders at Odysseo to highlight the challenges of the circular economy in Mauritius.

The event brought together various stakeholders, including the Minister of Agro-industry, Arvin Boolell, and representatives from organizations involved in waste management. The goal was to promote local initiatives and enhance mobilization around recycling.

A short film titled "What We Save" was presented, showcasing industry players and initiatives aimed at turning waste into resources. Another short film, "The Cities' Cigarette Butts," was also screened to raise awareness about the impacts of waste on the environment, particularly marine ecosystems.

Speakers emphasized that despite progress, a significant portion of waste in Mauritius is still landfilled, calling for increased mobilization to develop sustainable solutions.

They also stressed the need for a clear regulatory framework and enhanced institutional support to facilitate the transition to a circular economy.

According to the organizers, this transformation requires collaboration among the public, private sectors, and civil society, as well as a change in behaviors.

The event highlighted the potential of the circular economy as a lever for sustainable development and value creation for the country.
