[Parliament] Videos of Assaults on Police: The Law Will Be Toughened
During the Prime Minister's question session in Parliament this Tuesday, Navin Ramgoolam announced that laws related to physical and verbal assaults on law enforcement officers will be toughened. He responded to a query from MP Raviraj Beechook, who highlighted the dissemination of videos on social media showing assaults against police officers. Those who record and share such content on digital platforms will also be targeted. The aim is to curb the spread of hostile behaviors that undermine the integrity of police officers.
To effectively implement this reform, the Mauritian government is negotiating an intergovernmental agreement with the Indian government. This partnership will provide technical and legal expertise to better regulate the digital space and adapt laws to technological realities. Navin Ramgoolam stated that recent incidents on the ground necessitate a rigorous and coordinated legislative response.
