The Bar Council Rejects Allegations by Dev Jokhoo and Plans to Issue a Formal Notice
The Mauritius Bar Council has expressed serious concern over recent public statements made by former Prison Commissioner Dev Jokhoo, as reported in the press, where allegations were directed at members of the legal profession.
In a statement signed by Me Yatin Varma, Secretary of the Bar Council, the lawyers' order pointed out "two points of great seriousness":
- The allegation that certain lawyers may have been involved in inappropriate practices related to detainees or facilitated them.
- The allegation that individuals are being held in detention due to their lawyers' failure to meet professional obligations.
The Bar Council categorically rejects these allegations and has decided to formally bring the matter to the attention of the Secretary of Home Affairs and the Disciplined Forces Service Commission for review.
Furthermore, the Bar Council has instructed that a formal notice be sent to the Prison Commissioner, demanding that he either substantiate his allegations or retract them immediately.
"Such unfounded and general accusations are deeply regrettable and risk undermining public confidence in the administration of justice," the statement reads.
