Ban on Mobile Phones in Schools: The Rule That Will Change Everything Starting This Term
The first school term concluded on Friday, marking a significant turning point for educational institutions. As the second term begins, students will have to say goodbye to freely using their mobile phones and other connected devices in class.
These devices will now be strictly prohibited on school premises, unless they are used for supervised educational purposes or in case of a medical emergency. This measure, anticipated for some time and initially announced for 2025, is based on the Education (Control and Use of Personal Mobile Devices in School Premises) Regulations 2026. It has been developed in close collaboration with the Office of the Attorney General.
Recently, school heads were informed about the implementation details during a meeting at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation in Réduit. The Minister of Education, Mahend Gungapersad, aims to expedite the application of these new rules, which he deems essential.
He also emphasized the crucial role of parents, teachers, and school officials, calling for a collective effort to better guide students and protect their development.
The regulations, prepared with the State Law Office and enhanced by consultations that have been ongoing since last year, are currently in their final phase. Their enforcement now depends on the approval of the Council of Ministers.
With this reform, authorities aim to create a more conducive learning environment and reduce distractions related to technology.
