Judicial Mortgage Claimed Against Suren Dayal: Six Properties Targeted

Three former elected officials from constituency No. 8 (Moka/Quartier Militaire), namely Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Leela Devi Dookun Luchoomun, and Yogida Sawmynaden, have approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to register a judicial mortgage on six properties owned by Suren Dayal.

This action aims to secure payment of £94,914.22 (approximately Rs 4.5 million), awarded following an electoral dispute. The case pertains to Suren Dayal's electoral petition against the three former officials from No. 8, which was dismissed in 2022. This decision was upheld on appeal by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in October 2023, with an order to pay costs.

The targeted properties include a commercial space, an apartment, and several plots of land located in Mahébourg, Vacoas, Surinam, and Moka.

The request is contested by Suren Dayal, through his representative, Dev Hurnam, who argues that the claimed debt does not meet the legal requirements. The case is scheduled to be heard on May 11, 2026. Suren Dayal has retained the services of Me Kaviraj Bokhoree.
