In the East: Van Driver Arrested for Assaulting a Disabled Minor

A 55-year-old van driver, responsible for transporting differently-abled students, has been arrested following the alleged assault of a 17-year-old girl in a sugarcane field in Camp-de-Masque.

The incident occurred on Friday, April 3, 2026. After classes, the girl boarded the school transport vehicle driven by the suspect. After dropping off the other students, the driver found himself alone with the victim. At that point, the man deviated from his usual route and took a path leading to a sugarcane field in L’Unité, Camp-de-Masque. Once the vehicle was parked out of sight, he allegedly forced the girl to move to the back seat. The suspect then reportedly undressed before assaulting the minor and committing acts of molestation.

Quick Intervention
Following the assault, the victim filed a complaint at the Camp-de-Masque police station. Thanks to a swift response on the same day, detectives from the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU) of the Eastern Division arrested the suspect, identified as Bhaktaraj Ramesh Ramful.

This 55-year-old resident of Bon-Accueil has been detained. A provisional charge of "Causing Child To Be Sexually Abused: Aggravating Circumstances" has been filed against him. The police investigation continues to determine if this driver may have had other victims among the children attending the same school.
