In Roches-Brunes: When the Civil Status Officer Stands Up the Future Newlyweds

Planned as a joyful occasion, the civil marriage celebration at home turned into a disappointment for a family in Roches-Brunes. The unexplained absence of a civil status officer forced the couple to postpone the ceremony, causing confusion and anger.

In Roches-Brunes, a family claims they experienced a particularly distressing situation on the day of their son's civil wedding. Sheila, the mother, denounces an incident she describes as "shocking and unacceptable," following the absence of a civil status officer at a ceremony that had been duly organized.

The civil wedding celebration for her son was scheduled for Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 2 PM, at their family home. A fee of Rs 1,500 had been paid to the Beau-Bassin civil status office to ensure an officer would attend to conduct the ceremony.

According to Sheila, all arrangements had been made for the event to proceed smoothly. Three phone numbers had been provided to facilitate contact with the officer in charge of the ceremony.

A Deep Disappointment

On the big day, around 75 guests were present. The reception had been carefully organized, including catering and a photographer. However, despite the wait, no officer showed up. The family claims they waited until 5 PM without receiving any calls or explanations. "Everything was ready, and no one came," she laments.

The officer's absence led to the cancellation of the ceremony that day, leaving the couple and their loved ones greatly disappointed. The family also mentions significant financial losses.

In light of this situation, Sheila criticizes the lack of professionalism and questions the functioning of the civil status service. Ultimately, the civil wedding had to be conducted on another day, directly at the civil status office.

Contacted about this matter during the show "Explik Ou Ka" on Radio Plus, Mario Ayelou, Registrar of Civil Status, called this incident "deeply regrettable."

On behalf of the civil status office, he apologized to the family and the couple, acknowledging the impact of this situation. He emphasizes that in nearly ten years in this position, this is an unprecedented case. In 2025, over 3,600 weddings were conducted without incident.

According to him, upon receiving the complaint from the "Explik Ou Ka" team, an internal investigation was opened to determine the exact circumstances of this incident and identify responsibilities. He specifies that an officer had indeed been assigned to this ceremony, and the investigation will establish the reasons for their absence.

Mario Ayelou adds that sanctions will be imposed at the conclusion of the investigation if faults are found. He also confirms that a refund for the costs incurred for the unfulfilled service will be processed. While expressing his regrets, he emphasizes that the majority of civil status officers are qualified and professional.

For the family, this episode will be marked by deep disappointment. They now hope that concrete measures will be taken to prevent such a situation from happening again in the future.
