Allegations of Child Abuse at Twaha Academy: Clarifications from Minister Arianne Navarre-Marie
New developments have emerged regarding the allegations of child abuse at Twaha Academy. Minister for Gender Equality, Arianne Navarre-Marie, has stated that two children came forward to the Family Protection Brigade. They provided the names of other students who may have been victims within the institution.
Additionally, a student reported yesterday to the Family Support Service in Flacq, claiming to have experienced physical abuse, clarifying that there was "nothing sexual involved," according to the minister.
An investigation is currently underway. Arianne Navarre-Marie encourages concerned parents and children to come forward and report any form of abuse.
For context, the principal of Twaha Academy Boarding School, located in Pont Lardier, is facing complaints filed by two children regarding instances of abuse. The investigation is being conducted by the Family Protection Brigade of the Eastern Division.
At the end of March, the institution was rocked by serious allegations. Among the whistleblowers is a Grade 9 student who accuses principal Azhar Peerbocus of inappropriate behavior.
Following these accusations, Azhar Peerbocus was dismissed from his position on Monday, March 30, with immediate effect.
Sought by the police, he is believed to have left the country for South Africa.
