Energy Crisis: Joanna Bérenger Calls for Urgent Measures and Rejects Homeschooling
In a video posted on her Facebook page, Joanna Bérenger addressed the repercussions of the crisis in the Middle East on the cost of living in Mauritius. She pointed out that, over a month after the outbreak of tensions, the government has yet to take concrete measures to alleviate the burden on Mauritians, even though a committee chaired by the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance is set to meet soon.
In light of the ongoing rise in fuel prices on the international market, she advocates for 'fair and transparent' actions, including a temporary removal of taxes on petrol and diesel, as well as support measures for purchasing power and local businesses.
Joanna Bérenger also warns against potential abuses that could occur during a crisis, recalling the lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Additionally, she firmly rejects any notion of resorting to homeschooling as a solution, arguing that it would further disadvantage the most vulnerable children. She emphasizes the essential role of schools as spaces for safety, emotional stability, and socialization, and calls on the government to consult with child professionals before making any decisions regarding students.
