Death of Magistrate Varsha Biefun-Doorga: Dr. Nishan Moheeputh Found Guilty of Gross Medical Negligence

Dr. Nishan Moheeputh has been found guilty of gross medical negligence by the Medical Council. He performed liposuction on magistrate Varsha Biefun-Doorga on July 19, 2024. Two days after returning home, the patient’s condition rapidly deteriorated. According to her relatives, she experienced severe abdominal pain and respiratory distress. She died on July 23, 2024, while en route to a clinic. Following the procedure, the patient developed serious complications that led to her death. The Medical Council conducted a preliminary investigation before referring the case to the Medical Disciplinary Tribunal, which upheld the charges against the doctor. It is important to note that Dr. Nishan Moheeputh was suspended by the Medical Council on February 13, 2025. This suspension was lifted on April 1 of this year, and the doctor received a severe reprimand.
