Fuel: Jayen Chellum Calls for the Removal of Excise Duty and VAT
In a letter to Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, Jayen Chellum, the Secretary General of the Consumers' Association of Mauritius (ACIM), has called for the removal of both Excise Duty and VAT on fuels. He emphasizes that his request is "not demagogic" and reminds that the Prime Minister used to commend the work of ACIM when he was in opposition.
Additionally, Jayen Chellum suggests a temporary increase in the price of bread to between Rs 2.60 and Rs 3, firmly rejecting bakers' proposal to raise the price to Rs 4.78. He acknowledges the international context marked by an energy crisis and advocates for the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee to address this issue.
