Bérenger discusses the possibility of launching a 'new MMM'
In a video posted on his Facebook page this Thursday, Paul Bérenger, the leader of the Mauves, discusses the potential launch of a new party. He asserts that "if the leaders of the MMM proceed with their 'false assembly of delegates' scheduled for this Saturday, we, the true militants, will be compelled to move forward with a new MMM, a new party, 'even if it breaks our hearts and it's difficult'."
Bérenger indicates that in such a scenario, the "true militants" will convene a "real assembly of delegates" to initiate a new MMM. He specifies that he will decide on the next steps starting Monday.
The MMM has been shaken by an internal crisis for over a month. Fifteen of the eighteen mauve elected officials have chosen to remain in government, while Bérenger, still the party leader, has decided to resign from his position as Deputy Prime Minister. He was joined by two other MMM deputies, Joanna Bérenger and Chetan Baboolall.
The group of fifteen elected officials who chose to stay in government has called for a delegates' assembly this Saturday, April 11, to vote on whether the MMM should remain in government or not. The party's central committee had already voted, by a large majority, two weeks ago in favor of staying in government.
However, Bérenger describes this meeting as a "false assembly of delegates", claiming that "the list of delegates is riddled with irregularities". According to him, the real question should have been: "were we right, since the end of last year, to denounce the government's excesses?"
