Indo-Mauritian Cooperation: Mauritius Establishes a Renal Transplant Unit

The inauguration of the Renal Transplant Unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle marks a significant milestone in the health history of Mauritius. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and Indian Foreign Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar celebrated a partnership deeply rooted in history and looking towards the future.

Amid a charged atmosphere filled with emotion and symbolism, the Renal Transplant Unit was officially opened on Friday, April 10, 2026. The ceremony brought together Prime Minister Ramgoolam and Dr. Jaishankar, both delivering a shared message that this project transcends medical boundaries to embody the profound ties between the two nations.

In his speech, Navin Ramgoolam did not shy away from the darker chapters of the country's health history. Echoing the words of Health Minister Anil Bachoo, he recalled that "there was a moment in our history, a dark and painful chapter, when Mauritians could not access dialysis. In reality, they were condemned to die. This is a truth that must never be forgotten."

In light of this past, the inauguration of this unit represents, according to him, much more than just medical equipment. "It is a symbol of resilience, a symbol of partnership, and above all, a symbol of renewed and tangible hope," he asserted. The Prime Minister also reminded that chronic diseases, particularly heart and kidney diseases, continue to place significant pressure on the health system, adding that "behind the numbers, there are men and women, fathers and mothers, sons and daughters whose families bear the emotional and financial weight for the long term."

A Model of Integrated Care
Operationally, Navin Ramgoolam detailed the comprehensive purpose of this new unit: prevention, detection, dialysis, transplantation, postoperative follow-up, as well as specialized nephrology, neurology, vascular care, and endoscopic services, all under one roof. "This is not just infrastructure; it is a model of integrated care aligned with international standards," he emphasized.

He also underscored the economic and human dimensions of the program: "Transplantation offers a sustainable solution, allowing patients to return to an active and productive life while reducing long-term healthcare costs." Beyond the numbers, he pointed out there is something even more important: the restoration of human dignity, the ability to live independently, to work, to travel, to enjoy life and to dream again.

Organ Donations
The Prime Minister also called for national solidarity, believing that "no transplantation program can succeed without the participation of citizens." He advocated for "the development of a national culture of organ donation," emphasizing that "every donated organ is a life saved and every decision to donate is an extraordinary act of generosity," citing the Indian example as a model to follow.

For his part, Dr. Jaishankar sought to root this inauguration in the long history of Indo-Mauritian cooperation. "Every visit here truly feels like returning to another home," he expressed. Speaking on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he clarified that "India does not just have a diplomatic relationship; it is a relationship of spirit — a relationship that refers not only to words but also to meaningful actions."

Regarding the new unit, he stressed its tangible impact: "This is not just a medical facility; it is a moment of hope for patients," who will now be able to receive treatment in Mauritius, "with less anxiety, less financial pressure, and more comfort for families. Most importantly, it is a second chance at life."

The minister also reviewed India's support in other fields — educational, scientific, digital, including the Metro Express, social housing, and major institutional infrastructures — stating, "We do not just want to build institutions; we want to build people."

He also announced the upcoming launch of a joint Indo-Mauritian satellite dedicated to Earth observation, covering agriculture, meteorology, and coastal monitoring. On security issues, he was unequivocal: "Your security is our security." Concluding with a note of sustainable commitment, he declared: "In the world, which is one family, Mauritius will have a special place in India's heart."

Health Minister Anil Bachoo, for his part, thanked India for all its assistance to Mauritius in treating patients, whether in India or Mauritius, particularly for specialized treatments.
