Mauritian Artists and Athletes: A Shift to Entrepreneurship

They captivate audiences, light up stadiums, and inspire an entire generation. Yet behind their artistic and athletic talents, Alain Ramanisum, Stéphan Buckland, Alexandre Martin, and Jean Diyaune Adriano Francoeur share a common vision: to build a solid future through entrepreneurship. Blending music, sports, creativity, and business acumen, their intertwined journeys illustrate a Mauritian reality where passion alone is often insufficient, but becomes a powerful driving force for reinvention, revenue diversification, and the determined pursuit of sustainable success.

Alain Ramanisum: "I dreamed of opening a restaurant"
Known for his voice and compositions that make the whole island dance, Alain Ramanisum has always nurtured another, quieter yet equally intense passion: cooking. "For a long time, I dreamed of opening a restaurant. Music nourishes the soul, but cooking feeds the heart in a different way," he shares. Four years ago, he took the plunge and opened his establishment in Port-Louis, a place that reflects his warm and authentic personality. Here, there are no compromises: local cuisine reigns supreme, just like the sega music he promotes in his artistic career.

In his restaurant, Creole cuisine takes center stage. Each dish tells a story, an inheritance, an identity. "Like in my songs, I want people to feel something when they taste my dishes. It’s another way to share my culture," he explains. For him, there’s a clear parallel between music and gastronomy: both bring people together and both allow for travel. "Sega evokes emotions, and Creole cuisine rekindles memories."

However, behind this entrepreneurial adventure lies a reality well-known to artists. "It’s not always easy to rely solely on artistic income. Being an entrepreneur provides additional security," he admits candidly. Thus, the restaurant becomes an essential complement, a pillar that allows him to continue creating freely. "I don’t see this as a plan B, but as an extension of who I am," he clarifies.

Despite a busy schedule, Alain Ramanisum refuses to make sacrifices. He remains deeply committed to his music career while developing his restaurant business. "I do not neglect either my artistic career or my role as an entrepreneur. Both excite me equally," he asserts. This dual identity requires discipline and organization, but he invests fully in both.

Behind the artist and entrepreneur is also a family man. Alain Ramanisum is a father of a boy and a girl, a constant source of motivation. By his side, his wife Laura Beg, also a singer, shares his passion for music and understands the demands of this lifestyle. "My family is my balance. Without them, nothing would be possible," he emphasizes.

Today, his restaurant stands out as a place where local flavors and cultural identity converge. Alain Ramanisum channels the energy he exudes on stage into this space. "Whether in music or managing my restaurant, I always give my best," he says.

Between notes of sega and Creole aromas, Alain Ramanisum embodies a new generation of Mauritian artists capable of reinventing themselves without ever renouncing their roots. "Ultimately, whether through a song or a dish, my goal remains the same: to touch people," he concludes.
