National AI Strategy: No Immediate Legislation, Focus on Adaptation
A roundtable discussion on the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) took place on Wednesday, April 15, at the Labourdonnais Hotel, organized by the U.S. Embassy in Mauritius in collaboration with the Law Innovation Agency and Kulana.
Among the speakers were Craig Halbmaier, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Mauritius, Gavin Glover, Attorney General, Monica Zent, Managing Director of the Law Innovation Agency, Jonathan Ane, CEO of Kulana, and Joel Lambert, Head of Legal at Mauritius Commercial Bank.
During his speech, Gavin Glover explained that "the national strategy on artificial intelligence has been designed to establish clear guidelines." He noted that a digital steering committee has been tasked with "identifying risks and gaps" and "assessing the need for targeted interventions."
No specific legislation has been introduced yet. "The question remains whether such legislation is necessary," he stated, advocating for a "gradual and thoughtful" approach.
According to him, the goal is to "not stifle innovation" but to ensure "a framework of trust and accountability."
The discussion focused on the practical use of AI within organizations.
