Fuel Prices: Mauritius Remains More Competitive Than Several Countries in the Region, Says Shakeel Mohamed

This afternoon, during a visit to constituency No. 14 (Savanne/Rivière-Noire), Shakeel Mohamed, Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Housing and Lands, held a press conference following his site visit.

In response to a question regarding the rise in fuel prices, Shakeel Mohamed explained that this increase is part of an international context marked by geopolitical tensions and energy price volatility.

He emphasized that, despite this increase, Mauritius remains more competitive than several countries in the region, including Comoros, Seychelles, and South Africa.

According to him, the government is aware of the difficulties faced by the population and is implementing measures to limit the impact on consumers. He also expressed hope for a de-escalation of international tensions, while reminding that even if conflicts end, a return to price stability will take time.

Furthermore, the Acting Prime Minister responded to a question about social housing, stating that the majority of the 8,000 planned homes will be delivered this year. He pointed out that about forty units were handed over in Henrietta this Thursday.

He also announced the identification of 20 new sites for future projects, while discussing considerations for alternatives, including a "sites and services" system, to alleviate pressure on housing demand.

Here is his full statement.
