Murder of Jaisen Sooreea in St-Félix: Suspect Ponnan admits to acting in response to provocation

The investigation into the murder of Jaisen Sooreea, 22, also known as Jenise, is progressing. The young man was fatally stabbed during a confrontation on the public beach of St-Félix on the night of Tuesday, April 14 to Wednesday, April 15. The tragedy has deeply affected the community of Surinam, where he was from.

The day after the incident, Anandasamy Ponnan, 37, was brought before the Souillac District Court on Thursday, April 16. The suspect faced a preliminary murder charge. The police opposed his release on bail, and he was returned to police custody. Anandasamy Ponnan was arrested on Wednesday, April 15, following a field operation by the Southern Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU) in collaboration with the Chemin-Grenier Criminal Investigation Division (CID). After being interrogated for an extended period, the suspect confessed to delivering the fatal blow, claiming he acted in response to provocation during a dispute with a group of young people, including Jaisen Sooreea. This Friday, the suspect will undergo a thorough medical examination by a police doctor as part of the ongoing procedures.

Meanwhile, the autopsy conducted by Dr. Seewooruttun confirmed that Jaisen Sooreea died from a stab wound to the chest.

On Thursday, the community of Surinam was engulfed in deep sorrow during the funeral of Jaisen Sooreea.
