Ras Natty Baby's Fight for Survival

Ras Natty Baby's Fight for Survival

Emilien Joseph, 71, known as Ras Natty Baby, is a passionate voice representing the realities of the Mauritian people. He is currently fighting for his life amid a challenging ordeal that has captured the nation's attention.

An iconic figure in the seggae genre—a fusion of sega and reggae—he has left a lasting impact on generations with his socially conscious lyrics and unique stage presence. Born in Rodrigues, he established himself in the music scene alongside artists like Kaya, helping to promote seggae beyond the island's borders.

However, today, the artist is facing a personal battle. He is suffering from a complex infected wound with necrotic tissue. His health condition is deemed critical. Thanks to the intervention of the Overseas Medical Care Assistance (OMCA) Foundation, Ras Natty Baby has been admitted for observation at Dr. A. G. Jeetoo Hospital. Due to the deterioration of his condition, he was transferred to a specialized facility in India.

He is currently in Delhi, receiving intensive care. The medical team has implemented a strict protocol that includes thorough evaluations, specialized wound care, and a necessary surgical debridement to halt the spread of infection.

Debridement

A successful surgical debridement of Emilien Joseph Nicolas's wound was performed by Dr. Ritesh Bazaz.

Following the procedure, the patient was transferred to the surgical intensive care unit.

Emilien Joseph Nicolas arrived from Mauritius on April 9, 2026, and is hospitalized at Park Hospital in Gurugram, India, in critical condition.

Upon arrival, he exhibited a severe leg infection with gangrene, associated with poor blood circulation in both lower limbs. His condition was worsened by diabetes, complicating the healing of his wound.

An initially planned surgical intervention had to be postponed due to cardiac complications, including signs of a recent heart attack. After stabilization and favorable assessments from cardiologists, a surgical cleaning of the wound (debridement) was successfully carried out, and he was subsequently placed in intensive care.

Tests confirmed severe arterial blockages in both legs, explaining the tissue deterioration and high amputation risk. An urgent revascularization procedure is now planned to restore blood circulation and attempt to save his limbs.

Currently, the patient is stable but under close observation. He is receiving antibiotics and anticoagulants. Despite medical efforts, the risk of partial amputation remains high if circulation cannot be effectively restored.

The immediate priority is to restore blood flow to prevent irreversible worsening of the gangrene. Behind this medical urgency lies a heavy financial reality.

Ras Natty Baby is not just an artist; he is a living memory, a symbol of struggle, and a voice that has carried the hopes and pains of a people. Alongside figures like Kaya, he has helped to promote seggae beyond Mauritius. His songs did more than entertain—they awakened, disturbed, and inspired. His music denounced injustice, raised awareness, and accompanied a generation.

Today, this voice risks fading into the silence of illness. Time is of the essence. But hope remains. Perhaps the Mauritian people, in a surge of solidarity, can offer a second chance to someone who has given them so much.

Support Concert for Ras Natty Baby

Roshan Boolkah, secretary of the Artists' Union, states that Ras Natty Baby, a member of the union, is receiving active support from the organization. It is in this context that the Artists' Union intervened to assist him.

According to Roshan Boolkah, on March 23, the singer was placed under observation at Dr. A. G. Jeetoo Hospital due to the deterioration of his health condition.

Last Sunday, he received a call from the singer informing him that he had been placed in intensive care. The secretary of the Artists' Union contacted the OMCA Foundation, which took over and successfully organized his transfer to India. The funds raised by the Artists' Union helped finance Ras Natty Baby's plane ticket.

The Artists' Union also intends to organize a major support concert for Ras Natty Baby. Part of the funds raised will be donated to the OMCA Foundation, while the other part will go towards the singer's medical treatment.
