Fatal Assault on Vijay Ramrad in Grand-Gaube: Linked to Alleged Debt of Rs 300,000

Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the death of Vijay Ramrad. Five suspects are currently in custody. The case, marked by extreme violence, is believed to be related to an alleged debt of Rs 300,000. The victim's sister-in-law provides a chilling testimony.

As part of the investigation into the brutal assault on Vijay Ramrad, six individuals were apprehended on Thursday, April 16. They include Jean Lorenzo Sansoucis (25) and Christ Whelan Sansoucis (21), both masons from Cité Mère Theresa, Triolet, as well as Marie Atena Megane Vacoa (19) from the same area, Raphael Cazy Charlot (27) and Marie Manuella Sansoucis Romeo (28) from Cité EDC, Amaury, and Marie Welana Pascaline Sansoucis. They claim that the victim owed a significant amount of money to one of them.

The arrest was executed by detectives from the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit of the Northern Division, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigation Division of Goodlands, under the supervision of Inspector Ramasawmy.

During his interrogation, Jean Lorenzo Sansoucis confessed to hitting the fifty-year-old on the head with a chair.

Christ Whelan Sansoucis admitted to assaulting him in the abdomen with a cutter, claiming that the weapon belonged to Vijay Ramrad, who had allegedly threatened them with it. The other four suspects denied any involvement in the assault. Following the interrogations, Marie Welana Pascaline Sansoucis was released. The others were taken back to their cells after appearing in front of the court in Pamplemousses on Friday, April 17, facing charges of "assault with premeditation."

Beaten to Death: An Unspeakable Violence

This assault took place on March 26, 2026. That evening, after having a few drinks, Vijay Ramrad, a father of three daughters, fell asleep beside his wife Nita in their home on TV Road, Saint-François, Grand-Gaube. Shortly after, five individuals knocked on the couple's door, demanding the life of the fifty-year-old. The group was looking for one of his colleagues, a waste collector. However, when the victim explained that she was not present, they would not listen and turned aggressive.

They also demanded Rs 300,000 from Vijay Ramrad, who claimed to know nothing about that amount. "They told him he had taken Rs 300,000, but I asked where he would get Rs 300,000? They were looking for Rs 300,000, where would I find it? I have no way to get that, then they started to beat him," Nita recounts. Helpless, she admits to witnessing the brutal assault on her husband: "They threatened me, saying they would kill me. Five people entered the house and stabbed him with a cutter."

The six suspects then left the scene, leaving the fifty-year-old unrecognizable, his body bloodied with wounds to his abdomen and other parts. Soon, the police and relatives were alerted. The victim's sister-in-law testified: "We received a call, his second daughter called to say they had stabbed her father. When we arrived, the police were coming, he was in a sleeping position, you couldn't see his face. The way he was beaten was unimaginable, you couldn't look, his eyelids were swollen, blood was everywhere, his stomach was cut. When I left, I felt like I had a great fright."

The police immediately transported the victim to SSRN Hospital in Pamplemousses: "He started bleeding from his mouth right away," our interlocutor continues. He was later transferred to Flacq Hospital, before returning home on April 5. But six days later, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to intensive care at Flacq Hospital, where he succumbed to sepsis, according to the autopsy report.
