Deputy Prime Minister Position: Impatience Rising Within the MMM
The MMM members are growing impatient. This sentiment has emerged from the latest political negotiations within the government majority itself.
A month after Paul Bérenger stepped down from the Deputy Prime Minister position, this constitutional role is more than ever at the center of discussions.
Within the MMM, there is a belief that this position should be filled by one of their ministers. Who will be promoted to the number two spot in the government? This question is fueling speculation and has even led to tensions within the majority.
The appointment of a new number two in the government remains a sensitive subject. This is primarily due to the fact that Paul Bérenger's departure marked the loss of the leader of the main partner in the Alliance of Change. However, among the remaining MMM members in the majority, no successor has yet been designated, as the party has opted for a collective leadership approach.
Compounding this is the ongoing issue of ethnic balance within the "front bench." Some have mentioned the name of Ariane Navarre-Marie.
Moreover, the MMM's demands do not stop at the Deputy Prime Minister position. The departure of Joanna Bérenger also leaves a Junior Minister position in the Environment vacant. Within the party, several members feel that this portfolio should also belong to them.
However, some observers claim that Navin Ramgoolam is not fond of having his political agenda dictated to him. He remains the sole authority with the prerogative to appoint or dismiss a member of the government.
For now, his priority remains the economic situation of the country, with an important budget exercise approaching quickly.
