Green Club: A New Initiative to Mobilize Communities Around the Environment
The Green Club initiative, aimed at empowering women and communities to actively engage in environmental sustainability and climate action, was officially launched on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Camp Laboue Women Empowerment Centre in Terre Rouge by the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Ms. Arianne Navarre-Marie.
Attending the event were MP Ludovic Caserne, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Jean Daniel Philippe Labonne, and other notable figures.
The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, with support from the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, across eight Women Empowerment Centres and 13 Community Centres throughout Mauritius. The Clubs will serve as community platforms to promote environmental awareness, climate-friendly practices, and women-led greening initiatives and livelihood activities.
During the event, a green space created by technical officers from the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries was inaugurated, and an exhibition was organized by the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, and the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI).
Approximately 100 medicinal plants were distributed to the Green Clubs, along with 300 fruit trees. Members of the Green Club at Camp Laboue also received gardening toolkits.
Additionally, members of 21 Green Clubs, established in the Women Empowerment Centres and Community Centres, pledged to protect and preserve the environment in their areas by conducting awareness programs on climate change, environmental sustainability, and waste reduction practices. They are also encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly activities such as climate-smart gardening, plant propagation, composting, rainwater harvesting, and water conservation techniques.
