Mismanagement: Foyer Trochetia to Cease Operations from May 5th
Foyer Trochetia, located in Pointe-aux-Sables, will cease its operations starting May 5, 2026. This decision comes amid rising tensions regarding working conditions and the management of the center.
According to a letter sent to the Ministry of Labor and Industrial Relations by the Confederation of Workers in the Public and Private Sectors, affiliated with the Private Enterprises Employees Union, the center's administrator, Arya Sabha, has informed the authorities of its withdrawal.
This will take effect at the end of April 2026, ending the management of the foyer by the association.
Work Stoppage
In light of this situation, the employees, organized within the union, announced that they have no choice but to observe a work stoppage starting May 5. This decision follows several unaddressed demands, despite numerous meetings held under the auspices of the Ministry of Labor.
Among the main grievances are the non-payment of certain salaries, including night work allowances, the revision of the year-end bonus, and requests for vacation reimbursements. The union also mentions a deteriorating work climate, characterized by increased pressure on employees and impacts on their health and safety.
The Foyer Trochetia issue has been ongoing for several years. Since 2018, discussions have been initiated to regularize employment conditions through a collective agreement. Concurrently, there was consideration for the center to be fully taken over by the Ministry of Social Security, integrating employees under the Pay Research Bureau scheme. However, this decision was never finalized.
Over time, the financial situation of the center has worsened. Arya Sabha cited a deficit of several million rupees, believing that the subsidies provided by the Ministry of Social Security were insufficient to sustain the operation of the foyer. The association had previously expressed its intention to withdraw as early as January 2026, before agreeing to a temporary extension at the request of the authorities.
Despite several mediation attempts, no agreement has been reached between the various parties. The Ministry of Social Security, for its part, has stated that it is not the direct employer of the workers. This position is contested by the union, which argues that the State remains responsible as the owner of the center.
In this context, the cessation of activities at Foyer Trochetia now seems inevitable, raising uncertainties about the future of the employees and the care of the beneficiaries of the center.
