Candidacies for General Elections Without Community Classification: A Bill Under Review
On Friday, April 24th, the Cabinet met to discuss a bill aimed at amending the Constitution to allow anyone to run for general elections without disclosing their ethnic affiliation. In accordance with Article 41(3) of the Constitution, opinions from the Electoral Supervisory Commission and the Electoral Commissioner were requested and are still pending.
The Cabinet also reviewed a bill concerning the establishment of a Constitutional Review Commission. This commission would be appointed by the President of the Republic and tasked with examining and making recommendations on various reforms, particularly regarding the protection of fundamental rights and the strengthening of democracy and institutions.
Both bills will be reviewed again in the next Cabinet meeting after receiving feedback from the electoral bodies, prior to their presentation to the National Assembly.
Additionally, the Cabinet noted that the issue of electoral reforms is being addressed separately. A report on the public consultations conducted earlier this year will be presented at the next meeting.
