Vijay Jodhun: Overcoming Drug Addiction

Vijay Jodhun, 31, has come a long way. From wandering the streets and struggling with synthetic drug addiction to losing his family, his journey has been one of a harsh downfall followed by an inspiring recovery.

In Petit-Sable, Vijay is a well-known figure. However, few are aware of the hell he endured because of drugs. Today, through sheer determination, he is learning to live again, working by the sea, with a single goal: to become a father his children can admire.

At 13, he was introduced to synthetic drugs. An adolescent's curiosity quickly turned into a trap. "At first, I thought it was just to try... but it completely consumes you."

His parents noticed the changes right away. A lack of interest in school, questionable friends, and unstable behavior. "They told me to stop... but the addiction was stronger than everything." School became secondary, then irrelevant, and Vijay dropped out.

Sleeping Under the Stars
At home, tensions rose. Arguments became daily occurrences. His parents tried everything: communication, accusations, threats. Nothing worked. One day, an ultimatum was issued – get help... or leave. "I had to choose. I chose to leave." This choice marked the beginning of his wandering.

Vijay found himself out on the streets. Without a roof over his head, without direction. "Sometimes I slept in front of the house... sometimes under the stars." He survived as best as he could, taking up odd jobs: masonry, carpentry, mechanics. Hard days, but an even tougher reality at night. Because the addiction was still there. "All the money I earned... went to synthetic drugs." Years passed. A life without direction, without stability.

Love
Nine years ago, a meeting changed everything. A young woman entered his life. "When I met her... I thought I could change." They fell in love and got married. Two children were born. Now aged 6 and 4, they became his reason to live. For a time, Vijay believed he had found balance. He worked, lived with his in-laws, and tried to move forward. But his demons resurfaced.

His wife discovered his addiction. The shock was severe. "She asked me to stop... she believed in me." But Vijay couldn't do it. Not yet. So she left.

"That day... I thought I lost everything." His wife took their children away. And along with them, a part of himself.

The Turning Point
Alone and broken, he returned to his parents' home. His mother, a widow, worked in the fields. A strong, silent woman, always present. "My mother... never let me down." This is where everything changed. "I said: enough. The synthetic drugs give nothing. They destroy everything." Without rehab. Without medical help. Without methadone. Just a decision.

The first days were hell. "The first day was tough... the second day worse." Withdrawal, thoughts, temptations. Everything pushed him to relapse. But this time, something had changed. "I think of my wife... my children... that gives me strength." He held on. One day. Then two. Then a week. Then a month. And four months passed. "I haven't touched it. Not even once."

To keep away from his past demons, Vijay radically changed his life. He moved towards the sea. He began climbing coconut trees. A physical, risky yet honest job. "I climb, I cut coconuts... I feel alive." Then a simple idea was born. Set up a small table by the beach. Sell coconut water. Coconut cream. To locals, visitors, and tourists. "I earn my living honestly. I am proud of that."

Hope
In the area, perceptions began to change. Those who once knew him as lost rediscovered him standing tall. "People give me advice... they encourage me." This support became an additional strength.

But deep down, only one thing truly mattered. His family. "I wait for her... I hope she returns." He doesn’t ask for forgiveness with words. He proves it through his actions. "I don’t want to smoke again. Never."

Today, Vijay thinks about the future. "I want to open a fruit and coconut shop." To offer stability. Security. Pride for his children. Every day is a step towards that future.

His mother remains at the heart of his battle. A courageous woman, a widow, who continues to work the land. "I want to make her proud... especially for Mother's Day." A simple goal. But immense for him.

Vijay hides nothing about his past. On the contrary. He wants his story to help others. "If I succeeded... others can succeed too." His message is clear. "Willpower and determination... that’s the key to getting out of this."

Today, under the sun of Mahébourg, Vijay is rebuilding his life. The sound of the waves and the aroma of freshly opened coconuts help him. Step by step. Without cheating. And above all, with a conviction stronger than anything else.
