Death of Singer Ras Natty Baby at the Age of 72

The artist Ras Natty Baby has passed away. A well-known figure in the local music scene, with hits like "Leve do mo pep" and "Nuvel Vision," he died this Sunday at the age of 72.

Born Joseph Nicholas Emilien, he had been in India since April 8 for specialized treatment due to complications from an acute infection in his right leg caused by cellulitis.

"Joseph Nicolas Emilien, known as Ras Natty Baby, initially underwent a complex heart procedure deemed technically successful, which included the placement of stents and advanced interventional cardiology procedures. However, despite an initial post-operative recovery under supervision in the intensive care unit (MICU-1), his condition critically worsened in the hours and days following," stated the OMCA Foundation.

Before being transferred to the mainland, he had been hospitalized in Mauritius since March 23 at Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital. His health had deteriorated progressively. Initially admitted for cellulitis that led to severe infection, the singer - who also suffered from diabetes - was facing respiratory complications.

An iconic figure of seggae - a blend of séga and reggae - Ras Natty Baby left a mark on generations with his engaging lyrics and unique stage presence. Born in Rodrigues, he made his voice heard on the music scene alongside artists like Kaya, helping to elevate seggae beyond borders.
